Bar Standards Board
Barraj Legal is a trading style of Rhys Johns, a barrister authorised and regulated by the Bar Standards Board, authorised to conduct litigation and accepting Direct Access (Public Access) instructions. You may ask for a quotation for legal fees at any time, and for this information in an alternative format.
Rhys Johns works primarily on a fixed-fee basis: a clear price for a defined piece of work, agreed in writing before any work begins, with no hourly clock. A written fixed-fee quote is provided following your free Initial View, normally within 24 hours.
Where work falls outside a fixed fee or a retainer — extended advice, negotiation, or the ongoing conduct of an unpredictable matter — it is charged at an indicative £400 per hour plus VAT, agreed in writing in advance. The rate is indicative and varies with the type and complexity of the matter, and Rhys Johns does not bill in six-minute units. VAT, and any third-party disbursements (for example Land Registry or Office of the Public Guardian fees), are charged in addition. The full fixed-fee price list is published at barraj.co.uk/pricing.
Rhys Johns undertakes property, commercial and employment work, together with private client advice and drafting — from court hearings and trials in those areas to the drafting of wills, lasting powers of attorney and trust vehicles. As a Direct Access barrister authorised to conduct litigation, he can advise, draft and represent clients directly, without a solicitor in the middle. Not all matters are suitable for direct access; where a solicitor needs to be involved, he will tell you.
For certain specified public-access services, the Bar Standards Board requires barristers to publish indicative fees, the circumstances in which they may vary, and indicative timescales. The specified services Barraj Legal undertakes are below; full indicative figures are set out in the fixed-fee price list.
Every matter is quoted individually in writing before work begins; figures are indicative and exclusive of VAT and disbursements. Fees may vary with complexity, volume of documents and witnesses, the level of conflict, and whether a contested hearing is required.
Rhys Johns holds professional indemnity insurance through the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund (BMIF), as required of all practising barristers. Details of the territorial coverage of that insurance are available from the practice on request.
If something goes wrong, the practice operates a free, two-stage complaints procedure. Complaints should first be raised with the practice; if they cannot be resolved, or have not been resolved within 8 weeks, eligible clients may refer the matter to the Legal Ombudsman, an independent service set up under the Legal Services Act 2007.
Legal Ombudsman · 0300 555 0333 · enquiries@legalombudsman.org.uk · legalombudsman.org.uk. The Bar Standards Board handles complaints about a barrister's professional conduct, separately from service complaints.
You can verify a barrister's authorisation on the Barristers' Register and read the BSB's Public Access Guidance for Lay Clients, both on the Bar Standards Board website.
